The 2009 event:-
Saturday 5th. September

Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow

Registration @ 9am

All participants are asked to be registered by 9 a.m. for a 10.30 a.m. event start time.

The event in 2009 will be similar to previous events and will be run in line with the International Olympic standard. Input from previous events is used to ensure operations improve each time; a number of ideas from last year will be considered this year.

The event, to be taken as a whole or as a team with members relaying sport-to-sport, will therefore be:
(sports are in order of running and all activities are subject to conditions and health and safety rulings)

Triathlon – International Olympic Standard
• 1.5 km swim (slightly under a mile)
• 40 km cycle (about 25 miles)
• 10km run (around 6.2 miles)

Location & how to get there
The venue will be Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow

Directions :

Coming from the Dublin direction, you follow the N11 (Dublin-Rosslare road) towards Wexford, passing through Ashford and then Rathnew.

Coming from the south, you will be following the N11 towards Dublin, passing through Arklow before reaching the turn.

About 2 miles North of Arklow, on the main road, you will see Jack White's pub on the sea side of the road - turn off here, heading for the coast (straight ahead). You come to a T-junction just before the beach and will see a car park directly ahead.
This is the base location for the event and can be entered by turning left (onto the coast road) and immediately right (into the first part of the car park).
Please drive carefully in the vicinity of the event and obey all signs and directions or advice from Gardai, Civil Defence and event marshalls.

Important Competitor Information

Registration

All athletes are asked to be at the venue by 9 a.m. and must register for the event before 9.45 a.m. on the day. Registration will take place in the main marquee at the Brittas Bay car park.

Briefing:

A briefing for all athletes will take place in the main car park at 10.00 a.m. Any route updates etc. will be given at this time. All participants must attend.

All land athletes should deliver their bikes, cycling kit and running kit to the Transition Area before 9.55 a.m. on the day. You will be provided with a bike stand position together with a numbered box for your equipment.

The Swim

The swim will take place in beautiful Brittas Bay, a popular spot off the coast of County Wicklow, the Garden County of Ireland. From a beach start swimmers will travel out, round a buoy, swim parallel to shore and in to land. The total distance is 1.5km, the full international standard distance.
The swimmers will then leave the water and proceed across the beach, through the shower station (kindly operated by Wicklow Fire Brigade), to the Transition Area. Team swimmers will "hand-over" to their cycling colleagues and individuals will don running shoes/ kit and exit the Transition Area.

A combination of the Garda Sub-Aqua Unit, Civil Defence and County Council lifeguards will be monitoring the swim and to facilitate their work and increase swimmer safety, we would ask anyone who is anxious about their sea swim to wear a white cap.

The instructions of all Gardaí, Civil Defence, Lifeguards and Marshals and other event officials should be followed at all times. Failure to observe such instructions will lead to immediate disqualification.

Note: If sea conditions are really unsafe (this has only happened to us once back in 2006!) swimmers will run a 2 km beach run instead. So bring your runners just in case !

Gear:
• Swimwear (a spare, in case of loss or accident, may be wise)
• Wetsuit (optional, water at this time of year is usually not too cold - some people wear them, others don't - it's up to you)
• Goggles (many swimmers find them useful)
• Second swim hat (if desired/ required for extra insulation)
• Vaseline, oil or other heat retainer (optional)
• Sufficient towels

The Cycle

The cycle involves two rounds of a circuit travelling from the Car Park/ Base Area out to the main N11, South towards Arklow, off the N11 at the Arklow exit, and back onto and along the coast road. Particular care should be taken when emerging from the side road onto the main road. Marshalls/ Civil Defence/ Gardai will be there to assist you with a safe turn.
The cycle route is predominantly flat with a good road surface. Water Stations will be positioned throughout the route.

The instructions of all Gardai, Civil Defence and Marshalls and other event officials should be followed at all times. Failure to observe such instructions will lead to immediate disqualification.

The cycle discipline terminates back at the Transition Area. Team cyclists will "hand-over" to their running colleagues.

Please note the separate entry/exit for runners - EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN RETURNING TO THE CYCLE/RUN TRANSITION AREA.

ALL CYCLISTS MUST WEAR A HELMET

Gear:
• Bike in good repair
• Bicycle pump, with suitable spare connector
• Spare tubes/ cycle repair kit etc.
• Singlet and other gear
• Cycling shoes (for extra comfort)
• Cycle helmet - mandatory - good quality recommended
• Water bottle

We generally have some support in case of mechanical issues but each cyclist is advised to take precautions and bring supplies too (even if we have a couple of mobile mechanics, it may take time to get word to us, and someone to you).

The Run

Runners depart the Transition Area by a separate exit from that used by cyclists, taking a left turn away from returning cyclists and following the coast road.
The run is and "out and back" along the pleasant coast road and in the main quite flat but there are a number of challenging slopes!!
Your route will be clearly marked as will each km and watering stations will be positioned along the way.

The finish line is back in the main car park - entering through the main gate

The instructions of all Gardai, Civil Defence and Marshalls and other event officials should be followed at all times. Failure to observe such instructions will lead to immediate disqualification.

Gear:
• Running gear
• Comfortable, supportive running shoes

Hints & Tips

Pop the following into your event bag…
• Vaseline (prevents chaffing and aids insulation)
• Sun cream (hope we'll need it - absolutely essential if it is sunny and even if not, a good idea)
• Talcum powder (useful for speedy entry to running shoes, for example !)
• Energy food/ drinks, if you use them

Please note that the Swim start location is over 1 km from the Transition Area. All swimmers will be required to walk this distance down the beach to the swim gate.

Swim caps help to reduce heat loss through the head (athletes may wish to wear a second cap beneath the competition cap to enhance this "insulation effect").

Safety

Key points that you should remember are :
• If in doubt about anything, please ask!
• Garda, Civil Defence, Lifeguard, Marshal and event official instructions must be followed at all times
• Please ensure that you are fit for the event on the day and that any relevant illnesses or conditions are made known clearly in advance to the organisers
• Please allow yourself enough time to reach the event comfortably and to warm up as required - for everyone's sake, DO NOT swim (especially), run or cycle "cold"
• If you are an anxious sea swimmer, please wear a white cap in the water; seasoned swimmers are asked to avoid wearing a white cap as this will draw unnecessary attention from the safety officials
• Cyclists, please ensure you are wearing a helmet before leaving the Transition Area
• Runners and Cyclists share the same stretch of road at the end of the cycle route - PLEASE TAKE CARE !

Thanks

We would like to acknowledge the help and assistance of the following without whose help this event could not be operated safely.
